Woods lost his father and role model on May 3, 2006, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He took nine weeks off to be with the family. He did not perform considerably well when he returned for the U.S Open championships that year. For the first time as a professional, he missed the cut at Winged Foot.
Woods met his love Elin Nordegren during the 2001 Open Championships. They were introduced to each other by Jesper Parnevik, a golfer who had employed the woman as an au pair.
